On any given day, a Delaware farmer might find himself doing one or more of the following:
- Fixing a tractor, combine or irrigation pump
- Ordering seed, feed, fertilizer or fuel
- Building or fixing fences, sheds or other facilities
- Scouting crop fields for pest or disease damage
- Reading soil test results to determine whether fertilizer or lime are needed
- Presenting a business case to the bank for funding an expansion
- Serving on boards or committees to improve the industry
Being a farmer today involves having skills in lots of different areas , including veterminary, mechanical, chemical, financial, and scientific skills.
That diversity makes agriculture an interesting and rewarding career choice, and it makes agriculture a great starting point for any school project! Farmers produce food, feed, fiber and fuel - things we all need for daily life. So, every time you study farming, you learn more about your world.
